Life After MBBS Abroad: Step-by-Step Guide to Returning and Practicing in India

Life After MBBS Abroad: Step-by-Step Guide to Returning and Practicing in India

Coming back to India after an MBBS abroad isn’t automatic as you have to clear a structured pathway before you can legally practice. Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide so you know exactly what the process looks like:

Complete your MBBS degree and internship abroad

You must complete your full MBBS course and clinical internship from a recognized university abroad. Ensure that your college is listed in the directory recognized by the National Medical Commission, as this is a non-negotiable requirement for practicing in India. Keep all your documents organized and ready, including your degree certificate, transcripts, and internship completion certificate, as these will be essential for a smooth return and registration process back home.

Understanding FMGE and NEXT

Foreign medical graduates must pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, commonly known as the FMGE, in order to practice in India. This exam is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences. It is worth noting that the FMGE has a very low pass rate, which makes thorough and dedicated preparation absolutely essential. In the future, the FMGE is expected to be replaced by the National Exit Test, or NEXT, so it is advisable to stay updated on any changes to this requirement.

Clear FMGE/NEXT

Prepare for the screening exam with complete seriousness, as most students dedicate anywhere between six to twelve months to this preparation. Use standard textbooks alongside reputable coaching platforms, and place strong emphasis on MCQ practice, regular revision cycles, and strengthening your weak subjects. Do not treat this as just another exam as it is essentially the gateway to your medical career in India, and your approach to it should reflect that.

Apply for provisional registration

To begin interning in Indian hospitals, you will need to obtain provisional registration, which can be applied for through the National Medical Commission or your respective State Medical Council. This registration is a mandatory step and should be initiated as early as possible to avoid any delays in starting your internship.

Complete Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) in India

Even if you have done a clinical internship abroad, it is still mandatory to do a 1 year internship in India. Make sure you intern at a hospital approved by the National Medical Commission, as this adds credibility to your training and is required for permanent registration. During this period, you will rotate through major departments such as medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and others, giving you good clinical exposure in an Indian healthcare setting.

Get permanent registration

You can apply for your registration through your State Medical Council (SMC) or directly via the National Medical Commission (depending on process updates). You will need to submit documents such as MBBS degree certificate, internship completion certificate, FMGE/NEXT pass certificate, identity proof, passport-size photographs and provisional registration certificate. Carry both originals as well as copies. Authorities will verify your degree authenticity and university recognition. The processing time for your registration takes anywhere between 2 weeks to a few months. Once approved, you will receive a permanent registration number and your name will be added to the official medical register. Congratulations! You are now eligible to practice as a doctor in India.

These steps sound procedural, but delays here are common. Many students lose months due to paperwork issues, not exams. Staying organized and applying early makes a big difference. Once you follow all these steps, your career truly begins, everything before this is just preparation.
